Stranger to the covenant of grace
“A man may be in the covenant of grace, and share in the benefit thereof, who is not in a church state; and a man may be in a church state, who is not really in the covenant of grace” (Thomas Hooker).
I found the above is very true, and yet has not been given much emphasis these days. It is frightening to think that “… a man might be accepted into the covenant of fellowship of God’s people and yet … a complete stranger to the grace of God in his heart” (Covenanting with God, p. 48).
